Experiencing Ireland
Heritage in Schools

Heritage in Schools
The Heritage in Schools Scheme is a primary school heritage education initiative run as part of the Heritage Council. The scheme is designed to inspire curiosity and appreciation for local heritage by encouraging “outdoor classroom” learning experiences.
Through hands-on, interactive activities, children gain a deeper understanding of their environment, history, and cultural heritage.
By bringing Trudy, a heritage specialist into schools and taking learning beyond the classroom, the scheme helps foster a lasting connection between young learners and the rich natural and built heritage of their local area.
Discover Local History
with Trudy
Trudy is a passionate tour guide and genealogist based in Laois, helping children uncover the stories of their own families and communities. Through engaging, hands-on activities, she teaches them how to use investigative and interview skills to gather local knowledge and collect stories from family and community members.
Focusing on post-World War II Ireland, Trudy encourages children to step into the shoes of their grandparents and great-grandparents, exploring what life and school were like for them at the same age. Through discussions, demonstrations, and interactive sessions, she helps children understand how life has changed over time – whether for better, worse, or simply different.
Bringing history to life, Trudy also takes the children outdoors to experience traditional games once played by past generations, encouraging them to use their imagination and connect with the past in a fun and memorable way.
